I recently read one of Rudyard Kipling’s Just So Stories, The Cat that Walked by Himself. It tells the story of how cats came to be domesticated, that is, as domesticated as cats would ever allow themselves to be. It makes a lot of sense about why cats are the way they are, seemingly aloof and slightly arrogant, but those of us who know cats would not really think that for one minute! To us they are clever, cunning, loveable, endearing but still very much their own cat. Cats without doubt, Walk by Themselves.
It got me thinking though about modern day domestic cats and the sorts of things they might find desirable if he or she were to have their own home. Any self respecting cat (which they pretty much all are) is likely to have accoutrements that provide for a most luxurious lifestyle. I think we would find mostly treasures that have something, even loosely, to do with comfort and contentment and are highly prized by connoisseur felines. Such delicacies of life will of course meet their discerning needs during those long waking hours
In my imagination it would be a place of mysterious, whimsical and unfathomable curiosities.
I had a lot of fun trying to put my life long experience with feline idiosyncrasies to good use to find suitable items to stock in this shop of curiosities and just the right, slightly eccentric but elegantly dressed shopkeeper to welcome you with a good cup of tea and find exactly what you are looking for.
It is with great pleasure I introduce to you Monsieur Edwin Francis Sulzberger, a sophisticated cat of elegant but unconventional character. His ancestors, originating from Europe were reportedly farmers, gardeners, occasionally photographers and often merchants in dry goods. Monsieur Edwin is a collector and purveyor of the finer things of feline life. He will, on all accounts, welcome you wholeheartedly to explore and enjoy his mysterious and whimsical collection of exotic treasures from all over the world. I am assured by those who know him well and who frequent his shop on a regular basis that you will find exactly what you have been looking for. Please make your appointment.
